What is Concrete Cancer?

Concrete cancer, or spalling, occurs when the deterioration of concrete with steel reinforcement (rebar) embedded within it corrodes. Concrete is a durable material However it is not waterproof and cracks form or water infiltrates and the concrete becomes more acidic, the steel reinforcement is exposed to oxygen, moisture and contaminants, this causes the steel to rust and expand up to 8 times. This expansion breaks apart the surrounding concrete forming spalls or breaks away lumps of concrete. The process creates a cycle of damage that worsens over time if not treated properly.
